The Theatre Centre is an arts organization, which has been operating for thirty-five years, dedicated to providing space and support for artists and new work. Tonight, The Theatre Centre’s members and supporters celebrated a crucial step in the progression of this organization: their move to a new home on Queen Street West.
When immersing himself into The Theatre Centre team eleven years ago — a place that has “gone from one crisis of space to the next” — General and Artistic Director Franco Boni made it his goal to ensure that The Theatre Centre would eventually have a stable home. His goal has evidently been achieved as Boni says that he “feels like for the first time, he is programming work”. Having a main performance hall, a café, a gallery space, a rehearsal hall, a green room and a terrace, The Theatre Centre is now being housed in a more permanent and versatile space, able to host more resident artists and international work.
What can we expect from The Theatre Centre for 2014? A tidal wave of diverse shows by Tanya Tagaq, Alanna Mitchell, Sabrina Mahfouz / Ian Kamau, Reneltta Arluk, Cynthia Hopkins, L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres, Mammalian Diving Reflex and The Torontonians, Tine Van Aerschot and many more.
The Theatre Centre also welcomes new resident artists, who will be creating and work-shopping new art over a two-year period: Jess Dobkin, Ian Kamau, Hannah Moscovitch, Maev Beaty, Tova Smith, Heidi Strauss / adelheid, Dan Watson and Christina Serra.
Tonight is only the beginning of the celebration of the endless possibilities this space will provide.
