The Lower Ossington Theatre remounts their enormously successful summer production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch this fall due to popular demand. With music and lyrics by Stephen Trask and book by John Cameron Mitchell, Hedwig retells the comedic, yet compelling story of a transgendered woman from East Berlin. After falling in love with an American GI, Hansel (Ephraim Ellis) undergoes a botched surgery operation (to become Hedwig) in order to flee communist East Berlin for America. Left abandoned, Hedwig attempts her dream at becoming an American rock star while living in the shadow of Tommy Gnosis.
After the production’s enormously successful summer run with Nathaniel Bacon in the role of Hedwig, the LOT casts former Degrassi star Ephraim Ellis for this newly remounted, gender-bending sensation of a musical. Kit Boulter returns this season in the role of Yitzhak, creating a relatable dynamic duo onstage, despite Hedwig’s enormous ego. All aspects of the band, including heels and eyelashes, are spot on. The comedy is ongoing while Hedwig’s past remains emotional and captivating – the perfect mix, designating this production as a must-see musical remount.
The production’s talent remains pure. Both Ellis and Boulter emit their vocal talents at the height of this production, equally complimented by their outstanding musical ensemble. Ellis successfully breaks all barriers, leaving each moment constantly engaging and utterly tear-jerking at times. The visual graphics parallel perfectly with the narrative, assisting to emphasize the plot line and highly recognizable musical numbers.
Hedwig is a concert of life, love, and the ongoing struggles and obstacles that follow, all relayed from a drastically different viewpoint. Overall, the production remains true to its entertainment aspect, while being able to strike an emphatic chord within.
