A two-hour dazzling spectacle of music, dance, acrobatic performance and horsemanship, Cavalia's Odysseo bends the imagination and takes you on a journey you are not soon to forget.
Based out of Montreal, Que., Odysseo began its first run back in 2011 and to date has been seen by over 900,000 spectators all over the globe. As a show with no dialogue, Odysseo translates into any language with performances that seem to defy the realm of human possibility.
The numbers alone are mind boggling: 65 horses and 48 performers from different corners of the world all working under the largest white top in North America. Although all cirque-type performances require a connection with the audience, Odysseo takes it to a level unlike anything I have experienced before. Odysseo functions like a living organism. The performers feed energy into the audience and the audience feeds the energy right back. It is this connection between the two groups that can be felt from beginning to end.
Odysseo calls itself "the best show ever" and that brand of cockiness works, as the show is backed by a creative team who certainly puts their money where their mouth is. Many times throughout the performances I found myself dazzled by the sheer complexity of the show — not just the physicality of it, but also the technical aspects. From a dropdown carousel hanging from the ceiling to the 40,000-gallon lake that magically fills the stage within minutes. These massive details are what truly makes the show awe-inspiring and magical.
Although Odysseo claims there is an underlying narrative throughout, it does not appear to have one. Each piece is separate and unique in its own way, but the show does have a primary theme. Odysseo's main focus is on the unbreakable relationship between man and equine and that relationship alone is enough of a narrative to connect the performances together.
Odysseo is a colourful, fast-paced, high tech, incredible journey which will satisfy any audience member beyond all expectations. It is one of the great wonders of the performance world and something that Canada can proudly boast about for many years to come.
Odysseo plays until July 16 under the Big White Top next to the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont. For more information, visit https://cavalia.com/mississauga/.
